Nifty struggles at 5,200; Infosys rises, Wipro down

Markets continue to be choppy Thursday, with the benchmark indices trading in a narrow range. At noon, the Sensex traded 5 points lower at 17,146 while the broader Nifty index declined 5 points to 5,197.

The Sensex traded in a narrow 90 point range while the Nifty moved in a 30 point band. Volatility rose marginally, which is expected on account of derivatives expiry.

Realty (-0.65%), auto (-0.65%) and PSU stocks (0.68%) led the declines. Two wheeler major Hero Motocorp (-3%) was the top loser on the Nifty index. Other auto stocks - Bajaj Auto (-1.8%) and Tata Motors (-0.5%) also traded lower.

State run Gail India (-2.6%), infra major Jaiprakash Associates (-2.4%) and public lender PNB (-2.2%) also saw selling pressure.

Metal (0.6%), IT (0.5%) and consumer durables (0.45%) stocks saw some upside. Steel manufacturer JSPL (2.5%) was the top Nifty gainer. Infosys (1%) and TCS (0.5%) gained but Wipro and HCL Tech traded lower.

The market breadth was weak with 43 % stocks declining on the broader BSE 500 index.
